Overview

Ecuador is prone to natural hazards, including droughts, floods, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. On 16 April 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck coastal areas in northwest Ecuador, leaving at least 671 people dead and more than 4,600 injured. Some 36,000 houses were declared unsafe for living after the earthquake.? 

Ecuador is a destination country for Colombian refugees fleeing armed conflict in their country. Of the overall 65,754 registered refugees living in Ecuador, around 97.3%, or some 63,978 people, are from Colombia.? 

Since 2017, Ecuador has become both a transit and a destination country for Venezuelan migrants. Around 926,000 Venezuelans entered Ecuador between 1 January 2018 and 30 January 2019, though this number does not take into account irregular migration into the country. Of those, some 253,500 people stayed in Ecuador.? 

For 2019, INFORM rated Ecuador’s risk of humanitarian crisis as medium, at 4.2/10.?
