Syria: impact of winter in the Northwest

During 2022-2023 winter season, six million people across Syria will be in urgent need of winter assistance, an increase of 28% from the 2021 figure. The winter weather is expected to compound the existing humanitarian needs of displaced people affected by over ten years of crisis.

Humanitarian Access Overview - December 2022

The December 2022 analysis found that, between July and the end of October 2022, crisis-affected populations in more than 80 countries were not receiving the humanitarian assistance they needed because of access constraints. Gambia, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka have entered the ranking since the last release.

Malawi: cholera outbreak

Since March 2022, Malawi has been experiencing the largest cholera outbreak reported in the last decade. Malawi needs medical supplies, vaccines, health worker training, and awareness campaigns on cholera to tackle the outbreak. People lack clean water and access to hygiene and sanitation.

Kenya: impact of drought in Turkana and Marsabit counties

In September 2021, the Kenyan President declared drought as a national disaster. As at July, the drought had affected 23 arid and semi-arid land counties out of the total 47 counties in the country. 4.4 million people are projected to face acute food insecurity at Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse food insecurity levels in these 23 counties between October–December 2022.

Pakistan: flooding

Since June 2022, heavy monsoon rainfall has led to an unprecedented crisis in Pakistan, causing floods, flash floods, and landslides. The disaster has significantly affected southern and central Pakistan, mostly affecting Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh provinces .

DRC: displacement in Nyiragongo and Rutshuru, North Kivu

Since March 2022, the armed group March 23 Movement (M23) has been launching offensives in North Kivu. The conflict is particularly affecting Rutshuru territory in North Kivu, which is close to the border with Rwanda and Uganda. The fighting escalated on 26 October, resulting in large-scale displacement.

Indonesia: Earthquake in West Java province

On 21 November 2022, an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Ritcher scale occurred at a depth of 10km in the West Java province of Indonesia. The earthquake has damaged at least 56,300 houses and has displaced around 61,000 people. At least 58,000 people are living in shelters.

Somalia: outlook on drought

Somalia has seen a threefold increase in extreme weather events over the last 40 years. As at October 2022, four consecutive failed rainy seasons had resulted in a drought already worse in duration and severity than previous droughts in 2010–2011 and 2016–2017.

Mexico: Venezuelan people stranded in Mexico

On 12 October, the US Department of Homeland Security announced joint actions with Mexico to create a more orderly and safe immigration system for Venezuelans. This aims to reduce the number of people arriving at the southwestern US border. At the same time, the number of stranded people unlikely to reach their destination is increasing, and the response capacity is overwhelmed.

Panama-Colombia border: migration crisis

Honduras: impact of floods

Tropical storms and prolonged rains throughout September–October have caused riverine flooding and consequent landslides across Honduras. As at 14 October, the rainy season had affected 188,000 people, including 144,000 affected by Hurricane Julia.
