Since the 1970s in West and Central Africa, river floods and agricultural and ecological droughts have been increasing while average rainfall has been decreasing. These phenomena have an impact on availability of resources and land, and consequently on the economic and living conditions of the regions’ populations.

Sudan: Increased violence in Darfur Region

Since December 2020, there has been a significant increase in resource-based intercommunal violence between Arab and non-Arab tribes in the Darfur region, located in western Sudan. Between January–July 2022, more than 470,000 people were internally displaced in Darfur, with violence cited as the main reason.

Sudan: Displacement due to conflict in Blue Nile state

The latest intercommunal violence in Blue Nile state began on 13 July 2022. As at 25 July, the violence had killed at least 90 individuals and injured more than 300. It had also led to the displacement of 31,000 people.

Afghanistan: Earthquake in Paktika and Khost provinces

On 22 June 2022, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale hit eastern Afghanistan, around 46km southwest of Khost city. The earthquake has caused damage in Paktika and Khost provinces, and has killed at least 1,000 people and injured over 1,600.

Bangladesh: Industrial accident, depot fire in Sitakunda

Fire broke out at a container facility on the night of 4 June 2022 at Sonaichari union, Sitakunda upazila, 40km from the port city of Chattogram (formerly Chittagong). The fire triggered multiple explosions, killing at least 41 people, including 12 firefighters, and injuring at least 300 others.
