Agricultural drought is threatening the food security and livelihoods of millions of Afghans, particularly in the country’s northern, northwestern, and central provinces. Nearly half of the country’s districts are classified as ‘very high risk’ and ‘high risk’ according to the Afghanistan Drought Severity Index.

This is an update of the Afghanistan: Key risk areas to watch: January – June 2024 and beyond. It considers how each risk area has developed since January and assesses whether the identified risks have materialised or whether their probability levels have increased, decreased, or remained the same.

On 11 October 2023, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck 28km north of Herat city in Herat province, western Afghanistan, days after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit 40km west of Herat city on 7 October. Between 7 and 10 October, there were also at least nine aftershocks. The reported number of casualties is likely to increase in the coming days as search-andrescue operations continue.

The Afghanistan Risk Overview is a biannual risk identification report outlining key emerging risks likely to affect the humanitarian situation in the country over the next six months. It aims to inform the humanitarian community of possible changes in context and humanitarian needs in Afghanistan to facilitate contingency planning, risk management, and response. 

The spotlight on social impact in Afghanistan is a recurring report released every four months that aims to shed light on themes emerging from information about the country that have or are likely to have a significant social impact. This report aims to focus on issues that directly affect the daily lives of Afghans and that may have profound yet overlooked consequences on the humanitarian response. 

Understanding the challenges Afghan households face in their own words and what they are doing to address and adapt to these challenges is an important dimension of knowing how best to support them. This analysis contributes to exploring the coping strategies that Afghan households living in urban and rural Kabul use to meet short-term basic and longer-term strategic needs.
