Since June 2022, heavy rainfall and strong winds have been severely affecting Nigeria. As at 6 October, flooding had affected 33 of its 36 states. As at 20 October, the crisis had displaced more than 1.4 million people and affected over 2.5 million. The floods have triggered a cholera outbreak in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.

This report aims to give an overview of the situation of migrants and asylum seekers in these areas, as well as those in transit across the country. It includes the most immediate humanitarian needs, access constraints, and information gaps.

Since 17 February 2022, armed groups affiliated with the Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin have surrounded Djibo town in Soum province, located at the border with Mali. The groups have been controlling the access routes to the city, preventing the entry and exit of people and goods. 

ACAPS’ Global Risk Analysis outlines a number of key contexts where a particular situation may notably deteriorate within the next six months, causing (a spike in) humanitarian needs.

On 8 October, category one hurricane Julia swept through La Guajira department in northeastern Colombia. The hurricane affected over 159,000 people. Uribia municipality faced the highest impact with at least 22,000 people affected as at 8 October. 

This report aims to provide an overview of the displacement and confinement situation and the differentiated impact on indigenous peoples and Afrodescendant communities observed between January–August 2022. It presents the main conflict dynamics in the subregions of Telembí, Sanquianga, and Pacífico del Sur in Nariño department.

The Ukrainian military launched a counteroffensive in Kharkiv oblast on 6 September, aiming to reclaim the northern and eastern areas of the oblast that were under Russian military control. In the following two weeks, Ukrainian forces regained control over 8,000km2 of territory with a population of around 150,000 people. The change in control has made many areas newly accessible, making humanitarian access possible. 

On 10 September 2022, the Syrian Ministry of Health announced a cholera outbreak after 15 confirmed cases and one death. By that time, at least 936 cases of severe acute watery diarrhoea and six related deaths had been identified in the country, possibly linked to the cholera outbreak. 

This biannual publication outlines key emerging risks in Afghanistan that might affect the humanitarian situation over the next six months. It aims to inform the humanitarian community of possible changes in context and humanitarian needs in Afghanistan to facilitate contingency planning, risk management, and response. 

As at 30 August, floods had affected at least 440,000 people in Chad. The flooding has caused the collapse of walls, houses, and public buildings and destroyed food storages. 

This report is the first in a series of periodic ACAPS reports capturing key recent developments and analysing humanitarian trends in the most crisis-affected oblasts of Ukraine. This report in particular discusses the May–July analysis period. 

One year after the fall of Kabul, this report revisits and reassesses the four scenarios developed in October 2021 in light of the current context. It aims to highlight the key developments over the past year from a humanitarian perspective. 

Since the rainy season started in June, heavy rains have been causing flash floods across Sudan, affecting 16 of the 18 states in the country. As at 5 September, the floods had killed more than 100 people, affected more than 278,500 people across the country, and totally or partially damaged over 58,600 houses. The risk of further flooding remains high.

The report identifies and analyses overland fuel trucking and distribution routes – specifically routes used to truck fuel from IRG to DFA areas. It uses satellite imagery to examine the use of these trucking and distribution routes and assesses the number of fuel trucks resent at key points along these routes, both before and after the UN-brokered truce came into effect on 2 April 2022.

Heavy monsoon rains in mid and late August 2022 in Odisha state have led to overflowing rivers and landslides that have affected over 950,000 people in Odisha, and around 170,000 people were temporarily residing in around 440 relief centres. 

Since 14 June, Pakistan has been experiencing an abnormal monsoon rainfall season, close to three times more intense than the past 30-year average. As at 29 August, the floods had killed more than 1,000 people, injured 1,600, and affected more than 33 million (equivalent to nearly 15% of the total population).

An estimated 1.7 million people need winterisation assistance before the upcoming colder temperatures in Ukraine. Temperatures are expected to start dropping in October and reach their lowest in January–February. The conflict resulting from the Russian invasion that began on 24 February 2022 has damaged homes, as well as gas, electricity, and heating infrastructure.

On 30–31 July 2022, heavy rains hit the Gambia. Torrential rains and thunderstorms caused flash flooding across the country. Flooding had affected more than 40,000 people, including 11 people who died and around 5,900 internally displaced.
