Nigeria: country-wide flooding

Since June 2022, heavy rainfall and strong winds have been severely affecting Nigeria. As at 6 October, flooding had affected 33 of its 36 states. As at 20 October, the crisis had displaced more than 1.4 million people and affected over 2.5 million. The floods have triggered a cholera outbreak in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.

Burkina Faso: Humanitarian overview of Djibo town

Since 17 February 2022, armed groups affiliated with the Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin have surrounded Djibo town in Soum province, located at the border with Mali. The groups have been controlling the access routes to the city, preventing the entry and exit of people and goods.

Colombia: Impact of floods in La Guajira

On 8 October, category one hurricane Julia swept through La Guajira department in northeastern Colombia. The hurricane affected over 159,000 people. Uribia municipality faced the highest impact with at least 22,000 people affected as at 8 October.

Ukraine: Humanitarian situation in newly accessible areas of Kharkiv oblast

The Ukrainian military launched a counteroffensive in Kharkiv oblast on 6 September, aiming to reclaim the northern and eastern areas of the oblast that were under Russian military control. In the following two weeks, Ukrainian forces regained control over 8,000km2 of territory with a population of around 150,000 people. The change in control has made many areas newly accessible, making humanitarian access possible.

Syria: Cholera outbreak in the northeastern regions

On 10 September 2022, the Syrian Ministry of Health announced a cholera outbreak after 15 confirmed cases and one death. By that time, at least 936 cases of severe acute watery diarrhoea and six related deaths had been identified in the country, possibly linked to the cholera outbreak.

Sudan: Floods

Since the rainy season started in June, heavy rains have been causing flash floods across Sudan, affecting 16 of the 18 states in the country. As at 5 September, the floods had killed more than 100 people, affected more than 278,500 people across the country, and totally or partially damaged over 58,600 houses. The risk of further flooding remains high.

Yemen: Fuel supply dynamics

It uses satellite imagery to examine the use of these trucking and distribution routes and assesses the number of fuel trucks resent at key points along these routes, both before and after the UN-brokered truce came into effect on 2 April 2022.

Pakistan: Floods

Since 14 June, Pakistan has been experiencing an abnormal monsoon rainfall season, close to three times more intense than the past 30-year average. As at 29 August, the floods had killed more than 1,000 people, injured 1,600, and affected more than 33 million (equivalent to nearly 15% of the total population).

Ukraine: Winterisation needs and response

An estimated 1.7 million people need winterisation assistance before the upcoming colder temperatures in Ukraine. Temperatures are expected to start dropping in October and reach their lowest in January–February. The conflict resulting from the Russian invasion that began on 24 February 2022 has damaged homes, as well as gas, electricity, and heating infrastructure.
