After the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2014, in February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion from Russian and Belarusian territory into northern, eastern, and southern Ukraine. This has resulted in mass displacement within Ukraine and abroad, mostly to the EU.
As at December 2023, approximately 375,000 refugees from Ukraine remained in Czechia, 75% of whom were women and children. An IOM survey conducted in the second quarter of 2023 showed that around 75% of the refugees intended to stay in Czechia for the foreseeable future. Since March 2022, over 580,000 people have applied for temporary protection or other forms of protection in the country. Such protection grants refugees from Ukraine access to healthcare, education, employment, and humanitarian housing.
Priority needs reported by refugees are health services, employment, language courses, and long-term housing, followed by medicine, financial assistance, and information access. The main integration challenges are language barriers and difficulty finding suitable work opportunities and long-term housing.
The main needs identified in the 2024 Regional Refugee Response Plan are protection, education, livelihoods and socioeconomic inclusion, health and nutrition, and essential services.
