After the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2014, in February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion from Russian and Belarusian territory into northern, eastern, and southern Ukraine. This has resulted in mass displacement within Ukraine and abroad, mostly to the EU.
As at 14 January 2024, over 114,000 refugees from Ukraine remained in Slovakia. Since March 2022, nearly 135,000 people had applied for temporary protection or other forms of legal protection. Most refugees were women and children, comprising 52% and 30%, respectively. Refugees with temporary protection status have access to healthcare, education and employment, and, for families with children, people with disabilities, and the unemployed, social assistance.
According to an IOM survey conducted in the second quarter of 2023, the main needs of refugees from Ukraine were health services, financial assistance, medicine, language courses, and education for adults. Among the inclusion challenges respondents listed were financial issues, lack of job and employment opportunities, language barriers, and access to services.
The main needs identified in the 2024 Regional Refugee Response Plan were protection, social safety net access, information access, quality health services, employment, education, housing, and childcare.
