Many migrant workers, most of them from Nepal, lost their employment when the Indian governmentimposed a strict lockdown on 25 March to contain the spread of COVID-19. With theeasing of the lockdown, 600,000 migrant workers are expected to return to Nepal in the coming weeks andmay weaken the effectiveness of Nepal’s COVID-19 mitigation measures.

These scenarios were developed in January 2020 through team mapping and analysis exercises by four Yemen researchers, validated through interviews with key stakeholders. The draft report was further developed and revised on the basis of a literature review, rounds of extensive revision and input from ACAPS economists. Subsequently, as the Saudi deposit to CBY Aden depleted, the report was updated in May 2020 to reflect the impact of COVID-19 both on Yemen and developments in south Yemen.

On 31 May, Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 11th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak (on record), in Wangata health zone, in the southern part of Mbandaka city, capital of Equateur province and in the city’s surrounding area, and Bikoro. Given Mbandaka is a major river port with significant connections to other parts of the DRC, there is risk of spread to other areas of DRC if tracing does not identify all cases and prevent further contamination.

In Venezuela, the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on 13 March 2020 and containment measures were introduced over the following weeks. Nigeria: Vulnerabilities to COVID-19 and containment measures

As of 25 May, Nigeria reported more than 7,800 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 226 related deaths. Most cases (around 60%) have been registered in Lagos and Kano states, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). 35 of 37 states have reported COVID-19 cases, including conflict-affected states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe. Testing capacity in Nigeria is now increasing, but the health system is weak, and many areas of the countries are not easily accessible.

Somalia: Gu season floods

Heavy rains since the Gu season’s start in early April have affected more than 612,000 people across Somalia. Flash floods in northern Somalia and riverine flooding in the southern Juba and Shabelle river basins have displaced 217,000 people and killed 16. Displacement continues as river water levels rise and risk further flooding in the Juba and Shabelle river basins.

The Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive over Sri Lanka in mid to late May 2020. According to the National Department of Meteorology, an estimated 35,000 to 50,000 families may be displaced, based on analysis of previous floods and landslides.
