This report provides an update to previous ACAPS reports that explore measures adopted by governments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our reports are a component of ACAPS’ broader effort to monitor the secondary impacts of the pandemic and are based on publicly available data assembled by our team through a wide scanning of information across the globe.

Many migrant workers, most of them from Nepal, lost their employment when the Indian governmentimposed a strict lockdown on 25 March to contain the spread of COVID-19. With theeasing of the lockdown, 600,000 migrant workers are expected to return to Nepal in the coming weeks andmay weaken the effectiveness of Nepal’s COVID-19 mitigation measures. 

These scenarios were developed in January 2020 through team mapping and analysis exercises by four Yemen researchers, validated through interviews with key stakeholders. The draft report was further developed and revised on the basis of a literature review, rounds of extensive revision and input from ACAPS economists. Subsequently, as the Saudi deposit to CBY Aden depleted, the report was updated in May 2020 to reflect the impact of COVID-19 both on Yemen and developments in south Yemen.

This analysis examines how COVID-19 measures are impacting humanitarian’s ability to deliver gender responsive and gender sensitive programming for the Rohingya. It aims to inform humanitarian responders and enable them to consider strategies to mitigate any risks arising.

On 31 May, Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 11th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak (on record), in Wangata health zone, in the southern part of Mbandaka city, capital of Equateur province and in the city’s surrounding area, and Bikoro. Given Mbandaka is a major river port with significant connections to other parts of the DRC, there is risk of spread to other areas of DRC if tracing does not identify all cases and prevent further contamination. 

This report follows on from the findings of past COVID-19 Explained Editions and Health Behaviours and COVID-19. For this edition, 56 key informants were requested to provide detailed accounts of their recent experiences of medical consultations and treatments.

The secondary impacts of COVID-19 continue to shift the humanitarian and development landscape across the globe. This week’s findings discuss the complexity of COVID-19 myths and rumours driven by cultural and political nuances. We hope this will support national and international actors seeking to mitigate the spread of COVID- 19 through behaviour change messaging and initiatives.

In Venezuela, the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on 13 March 2020 and containment measures were introduced over the following weeks. An increase in cases is likely, due to an inconsistent adherence to the lockdown, limited PCR testing, and limitations on regular access to hygiene related to water shortages.

Worldwide, governments are implementing a range of measures to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. These actions may hamper humanitarian operations, particularly measures that restrict entry, movement, or people gathering. This report explores humanitarian exemptions to measures adopted by governments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of 25 May, Nigeria reported more than 7,800 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 226 related deaths. Most cases (around 60%) have been registered in Lagos and Kano states, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). 35 of 37 states have reported COVID-19 cases, including conflict-affected states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe. Testing capacity in Nigeria is now increasing, but the health system is weak, and many areas of the countries are not easily accessible.

The Humanitarian Experts Network was established by ACAPS on the 6th of April this year. Each week we have invited HEN members to participate in a COVID-19 perceptions survey – about what they are seeing, thinking, and doing in the contexts they work. This report explores how government measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19 may hinder the response to the ongoing desert locust outbreak in East Africa. The analysis also examines the secondary impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in tandem with those of the desert locust outbreak. The focus is primarily on the three countries most heavily impacted by locust infestations to date: Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

Heavy rains since the Gu season’s start in early April have affected more than 612,000 people across Somalia. Flash floods in northern Somalia and riverine flooding in the southern Juba and Shabelle river basins have displaced 217,000 people and killed 16. Displacement continues as river water levels rise and risk further flooding in the Juba and Shabelle river basins. 

This report aims to provide a summary of key trends that affected the humanitarian situation in 2019, and key trends to watch in 2020, to support humanitarian planning.

This is the 5th Humanitarian Experts Network report which gave us the opportunity to follow up on the following issues that emerged from previous surveys: programme adaptations, concerns for children not in school, increasing numbers of people in need, increasing levels of domestic violence.

The Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive over Sri Lanka in mid to late May 2020. According to the National Department of Meteorology, an estimated 35,000 to 50,000 families may be displaced, based on analysis of previous floods and landslides.
