Mayotte: Impact of Tropical Cyclone Chido

Early morning on 14 December, Chido made landfall in Mayotte, with sustained winds of 225km/h. At least 22 deaths and 1,500 injuries had been reported, a figure that could rise significantly as relief efforts progress, as many people remain missing. 40% of houses in Mayotte were already in precarious condition.

DRC: conflict across the west

The conflict in Kwamouth territory, Mai-Ndombe province, in the western DRC erupted in June 2022 because of a longstanding dispute between the Teke and Yaka communities over land rights and customary fees. Factors such as increasing population pressure, resource scarcity, and political manipulation have aggravated conflict between the two communities. As of 24 October 2024, 146,000 people have been displaced.

Ukraine: anticipating developments and impacts in Sumska oblast

Following the onset of Ukrainian forces’ crossborder incursion into Russia’s Kursk oblast in August 2024, Russian attacks in Sumska oblast have increased, leading to a deterioration in the oblast’s overall context. Syria: escalation of conflict in the northwest

On 27 November 2024, the opposition group Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, launched an operation against Government of Syria in Aleppo. Within six days, the opposition had significantly expanded its territorial control. It is estimated that hundreds of civilians have been killed or injured. Escalating violence has displaced up to 178,000 people, severely affecting shelter, food security, healthcare, and access to education.

Mexico: impacts of Hurricane John

The Pacific Coast of Mexico received the first landfall of Hurricane John on 23 September and then the second landfall on 27 September. Over 280,000 people have been affected in Guerrero and Oaxaca state, and at least 39,000 houses were damaged in Guerrero state. Over 40,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed.

Cuba: impact of Hurricane Oscar

On 20 October 2024, Hurricane Oscar landed in Cuba as a Category 1. In Guantanamo province, floods and landslides particularly affected the municipalities of Baracoa, Imías, Maisí, and San Antonio del Sur. By 22 October, at least 15,000 people were affected, including seven fatalities.

Palestine: Humanitarian impact of escalating conflict in northern Gaza

Heavy rainfall on 27–28 September caused flash floods, the overflow of rivers, and landslides in 44 districts across Nepal, with the worst effects in the hilly Kathmandu Valley followed by the plains of eastern Koshi and Madhesh provinces, increasing their vulnerability to flooding.
